The massive sylvan environment's four ... five ... zones.

The massive sylvan environment of The Snarl can be divided into four distinct zones/layers—and a fifth otherworldly outlier.

The Canopy — The Canopy is the treetop realm, awash in light from the three suns. The major civilizations make their home here, building balloon airships for easy travel over the forest heights. The Canopy is the safest region, untouched by the Creep. The Tangle —
The Tangles are the middle realm, lush with life and rich with sap. Thick entangling foliage is what gives the wilds of the Snarl their name. Well-traveled pathways overgrow quickly; travelers must cut their way through untamed growths. The environment is dim, lit by scattered sunlight and fluorescent flora. The air is damp and choked with thick mist. The Mulch — The Mulch is where the massive pillar trunks erupt from dense layers of compost. This is a dark and murky place, lit only by eerie fungus and bioluminescent bugs. Scavengers feed on the detritus that falls from above. Thick mud makes travel difficult. Feral creatures lurk here, and the Creep is an ominous presence, methodically encroaching upon everything. The Roots — Thick roots wind through the decayed and petrified matter below the Mulch. Brave explorers seek out the ruins of dead and buried civilizations, crawling along tunnels left by massive boleworms. The tunnel air is thick and oppressive, or sometimes unbreathable due to the outgassing of decomposition. Notches — Scattered throughout the Weald are prized gateways that lead to transdimensional spaces known as notches. The largest can hold entire cities. Notches provide protection and safety during fierce shredstorms; elsewise, they provide space for wonders to thrive and grow within the physical constraints of the pillars.
